I would not be surprised if Farkle being weird and different was legitimately just bad writing. Based on the episodes we've had so far, barring the stellar Ski Lodge, it's all been slightly above average at best, ranging down to straight up mediocre. The problem for me, really, is that I'm not sure the showrunners have proven, so far this season, that they're really laying down these hard, intense, important topics. I mean let's not forget, he does already have "Kind of Aspergers but not 100%"itis from way back when. Now that you mention it though, I do definitely see the depression/anxiety/something train of thought, and I could potentially see it coming to a proper head at some point. He has a girlfriend, he's gotten over the nerdy thing, he's basically perfectly achieved the state of a normal, ordinary kid. And I honestly figured it was because they had no idea where to go with his character from this point, combined with a bit of flat acting that gave him that sort of gloomy portrayal. Lucas is still a completely underdeveloped character, a mostly blank slate just begging to be given something interesting to work with, but meanwhile Farkle has already reinvented himself ten different times. I'll admit, I've found the somewhat repetitive "Farkle has to find out who he really is" episodes increasingly tedious to sit through. And I do think that that still plays a part in it. I've just spent the entire season assuming the writers had completely run out of ideas what to do with him and his character now that the whole quintessential nerd schtick has gone away. Well, either that or he's spouting whimsy about how incredible and great friendship is and how happy he is to have friends and how hopefully their friendship never ends and blablabla. When he was in elementary school, he was sure he is in love in his two best friends, in the same way, and that he will be in love in them forever. He's definitely become this weird, gloomy cloud that kind of hangs over every scene looking like he's about to tell them some awful tragic news or something.
